The Afghanistan Social Marketing Organization (ASMO) serves as a major source of contraception and other health products via the private sector. The Abt-led USAID SHOPS Plus project worked to improve the procurement of ASMO products through regional suppliers, helping reduce stockouts and the costs of getting products to market.
Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is crucial for people living with HIV to maintain healthy lives and prevent disease transmission. Tracking patients’ retention in treatment in the early stages is an important way of monitoring and ensuring adherence. The Abt-led Efficiencies for Clinical HIV Outcomes Project has helped four provinces in Mozambique achieve remarkable improvements in one-month and three-month ART retention.
In Bignona, a city in southern Senegal, the fight against maternal mortality has been a real challenge due to lack of essential reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) care infrastructure. The Abt-led, USAID-funded Government Technical Assistance Provider (GoTAP) project, a direct government-to-government financing mechanism, developed a co-financing scheme with another malaria/RMNCH-focused project to rehabilitate the city’s health center.
As indoor residual spraying continues to decrease the number of malaria deaths per year, the PMI VectorLink project works with village chiefs and Traditional Authorities to improve community engagement. Rachel Longwe, the 72-year-old Vwawa Village Chief, expresses the importance of IRS and the impact it had on her village in Malawi.
Abt assessed the impact of COVID-19 on family planning products in India’s health markets, aiming to identify the root causes behind supply chain shortages and shed light on what mitigating actions leaders can take to build more resilient markets. Synthesizing data from interviews and document reviews, Abt researchers were able to produce a policy brief of their findings to help prevent future market shocks.
One in 10 of the total deaths in Nepal in 1990 was attributed to five major metabolic risk factors: high systolic blood pressure, high total cholesterol, high fasting plasma glucose, high body mass index and impaired kidney functions. This analysis of risk factors in Nepal projected that non-communicable diseases will contribute to over two-thirds of total deaths in 2040.
Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is a key tool for controlling malaria. Developing effective interventions requires understanding the impact of vector control tools on malaria incidence. Abt has collated IRS data from various sources to highlight gaps between IRS policy and practice in sub-Saharan Africa and inform evidence-based decisions on malaria control efforts.
